French Marble Top Antique Commode with Chinoiserie Finish
This exquisite antique French bombe commode exemplifies the Asian influences we find in 18th and 19th century art, architecture and décor. During this era, English, Dutch and French craftsmen would create furniture pieces and then ship them off to the Orient for adornment. Asian craftsman would apply the artistry of their culture to the pieces, a practice referred to as Chinoiserie by the French. Within this style we often see various scenes of romance or battle, or in the case of this piece, theater. This style is highly desirable today, because, as you can imagine, the French did not send many pieces to Asia to be finished. Chinoiserie of this quality is a rare find – especially in Indiana!
